We can find “Morey” winegrowers in Chassagne-Montrachet since 1643. We’re a family with deep roots in this village, and it’s often difficult to keep track of everyone’s connections! Over the generations, this profession and the winegrowing heritage have been handed down century after century. Initially confined to the role of very small proprietors who also worked as coopers, things accelerated with my grandfather, Albert Morey. Entrepreneurial, hard-working and visionary, he was soon joined by his two sons, Bernard and Jean-Marc, and together they considerably increased the area of vines under cultivation in the second half of the twentieth century. He was also quick to introduce direct bottled sales at the estate, particularly for export. In 1981, each of the two brothers decided to set up his own business, giving birth, for my father’s part, to Domaine Jean-Marc Morey, whose wines have been recognized all over the world for their quality. In 2014, and again in 2016, it was his turn to pass on the 8 hectares under his care to my sister Caroline and me, giving birth to two small eponymous estates! On the road to 500 years!!!
And above all, there are the men and women who bring this project to life. They are the essential link in the whole, and I have every confidence in them. Through their actions, their knowledge, their enthusiasm and their loyalty, they bring the estate to life vintage after vintage! Big up to Chadlia, Yohann, Hafedh, Fabien, Marie and Pierre. Wine agents, wine merchants, restaurateurs, sommeliers, importers, journalists and wine lovers from all walks of life, each in their own way, take up the baton to highlight our wines. Many thanks to all!
In the end, the true aim of the Burgundian winegrower’s profession should always be to be as transparent as possible, to leave as much room as possible for the unique personality of highly identified terroirs. To make it possible to smell and taste the slightest variation in soil, altitude, vine age… That a Caillerets and a Champs-Gains, although neighbors, although harvested on the same day, vinified and matured in the same way, offer two different wines because they come from two different terroirs. We accompany the vines through each of their cycles, vintage after vintage, to help them produce grapes that are as healthy, distinctive and energetic as possible. Our working principles are those of organic farming, with the quest for balance being the essential value. This philosophy continues in the cellar, with input-free vinification using indigenous yeasts and bacteria. Finally, ageing is lengthened to give the wines time to reveal their full complexity, and bottling is carried out without filtration.
This is the story of a Burgundian winemaker who came to Luberon. He drew on his roots to make unique wines in the south.
A family call and a timely proposal put the winemaker back on the road. Today, from north to south and south to north, each vintage is written in the plural.
